Mental Health and Wellbeing
Supporting Healthy Minds and Healthy Bodies
At Laneshaw Bridge School, we believe that good mental health is just as important as good physical health. When we think about healthy living, we often focus on looking after our bodies through exercise, healthy eating and getting enough sleep. Equally important is looking after our emotional and mental wellbeing.
Our physical and mental health are closely connected. Positive habits such as being active, spending time with others, getting enough rest and talking about our feelings can help us feel happier, more confident and better able to cope with life's challenges.
Our Approach
The wellbeing of our pupils is at the heart of everything we do. As part of our commitment to safeguarding and personal development, we promote positive mental health through:
- A supportive and nurturing school environment.
- Our PSHE and Relationships Education curriculum.
- Regular assemblies and wellbeing activities.
- Opportunities to develop resilience, confidence and self-esteem.
- Workshops and visits from external organisations, including the NSPCC.
- Access to pastoral support when needed.
We aim to ensure that all children know how to look after their mental wellbeing, recognise their emotions and understand where to seek help if they need support.
Senior Mental Health Lead
Our Senior Mental Health Lead, Sarah Hill, oversees our whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing. She works with staff, pupils and families to promote positive wellbeing and ensure that support is available when needed.
We are committed to creating a culture where children feel safe, valued and able to talk openly about their feelings and experiences.
Supporting Your Child at Home
Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting children's emotional wellbeing. Here are some simple ways you can help:
- Talk to your child about how you look after your own wellbeing and model positive habits.
- Praise effort and celebrate the small things that help keep minds and bodies healthy.
- Encourage your child to focus on their strengths and avoid unhealthy comparisons with others, particularly online.
- Spend quality time together through activities such as reading, cooking, playing games or going for walks.
- Encourage regular routines, including healthy sleep habits and physical activity.
- Create opportunities for your child to talk openly about their feelings and concerns.
Our Aim
At Laneshaw Bridge School, we want every child to feel happy, safe and supported. By helping children develop positive mental health and wellbeing, we equip them with the confidence, resilience and skills they need to thrive both now and in the future.
Please do not forget, if you are worried about your child, you can talk to your GP or you can contact us at school for advice. You can also find a list of organisations that provide support and advice for parents on the website www.place2be.org.uk/usefulcontacts
