At Laneshaw Bridge School, we place a high value on pupils' personal development, wellbeing and preparation for life in modern Britain. Our PSHE curriculum supports children to become confident, healthy, respectful and responsible citizens who are equipped to thrive both now and in the future.
Personal, social and emotional development begins in the Early Years, where children develop the foundations for positive relationships, self-regulation, confidence and resilience. As pupils progress through school, they build the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to make informed decisions, stay safe, maintain positive relationships and contribute positively to society.
Our curriculum promotes pupils' physical, emotional and mental wellbeing and provides opportunities for children to develop the character, resilience and independence needed to face the challenges and opportunities of modern life. Through PSHE, pupils learn how to build healthy relationships, recognise and manage risk, understand and respect differences, and know how and when to seek support.
We follow a carefully sequenced curriculum based on the PSHE Association Programme of Study, ensuring that learning is progressive and builds upon prior knowledge and experiences. The curriculum is organised around three key strands:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Relationships
- Living in the Wider World
These strands are taught throughout the school and are enhanced through wider opportunities including assemblies, visitor workshops, educational visits, careers learning, enterprise activities, pupil leadership roles and community engagement.
In line with statutory Relationships and Health Education requirements, pupils learn:
- How to build and maintain positive, healthy relationships.
- How to keep themselves safe, both online and offline.
- How to recognise, assess and manage risk.
- How to maintain their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
- How to show kindness, respect, empathy and responsibility towards others.
- How to understand and value diversity within modern Britain.
Through our PSHE curriculum, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to stay safe, healthy and prepared for their future lives.
Evidence and Assessment
The impact of our PSHE curriculum is seen through pupils' knowledge, attitudes and behaviours. We gather evidence through pupil discussions, learning activities, classroom observations, pupil voice, participation in wider school life and examples of pupils applying their learning in real-life situations.
We expect pupils to demonstrate increasing confidence, resilience, independence and respect for others. They develop a strong understanding of keeping themselves safe, maintaining healthy relationships, managing their wellbeing and contributing positively to their communities.
Leadership and Quality Assurance
Subject leaders work closely with teaching staff to ensure that the PSHE curriculum is delivered consistently and effectively across the school. Regular monitoring activities, including learning walks, pupil voice, planning reviews and work scrutiny, help to ensure that pupils receive a high-quality PSHE education.
Leaders work collaboratively with colleagues across APEX schools to share best practice, review curriculum provision and continue to strengthen outcomes for all pupils.
